Ioniq 5

I bought a 2025 Ioniq 5 Limited in August. Here are the good and not as good.... Background: I am an engineer with 25 years of experience designing intuitive, easy to use, and safe user interfaces. Good: Solid feeling vehicle. Very quiet Lane centering works really well. Can take hands off wheel as long as your eyes are on the road. Cool feature. It would be nice if it did not complain when I laugh. Tesla requires constant pressure on the wheel which is very annoying. I would like these: One pedal drive mode should be a switch that stays on (or off). Like the 2018-2024 Leaf. One pedal regen below 30 mph should be stronger. Lane centering should be a switch that stays on (or off). Cruise controls: Engaging and dis-engaging is non-intuitive. Instead of a toggle, it should be on or off like other car makes. Occasionally when I want to disengage and dont realize its already off, I turn it on causing a potentially unsafe condition. Should resume by pressing the Up button, like other car makes. Pressing up or down should take less time to change 5 mph at one jump. Media control on steering wheel: Pressing up SHOULD go forward, NOT back. Pressing down SHOULD go backwards, NOT forward. I have to think about this every time I use it. Climate controls: Prefer physical buttons to fan speed, mode, recirc and temperature. Safer while driving and much more positive feel. Get rid of the touch or capacitive interface. The lights under the controls are not bright enough to see well in strong sunlight days. A rotary knob for fan speed, mode, and temperature would solve this and the above issue. Locking and unlocking using the door handle from outside. Again a button is better. Get rid of the touch or capacitive area in place of a depressible button. Be able to lock the vehicle from the rear hatch - add a button for this.

More Range

Over all car and features are great. Wish there was free charging station installation at home and more range on the vehicle itself. Only cha4ging to 80% is an issue because charging at 100% would be more beneficial.

Cute car but...

Really like the styling of the car, its zip, the UI of the buttons & how easy it is to charge. Also like all the how-to videos and want to watch more of them. But once you own it there are several things that downgrade it IMO. The heat takes a minute or two to heat up and on a cold day having cold air blow at you until it gets warm is really frustrating. When the windows are open, the air blowing in is really strong and loud, making driving with the windows open unappealing. I find the seat really hard and uncomfortable after my daily 1hr (x2) commute. The black interior is a bummer - so monochromatic and hot in the summer, and it seems to show every smudge. The car's alerts are so sensitive - I'll be parked in my driveway and as soon as I turn it on it's beeping at me that I'm too close to everything. I'm parked - of course I'm close to the side. And parallel parking is so annoying - the car hates every aspect of it and lets you know. The 'check the backseat' reminder is always on, vs just when something is put in the backseat, which means you tend to ignore it. There have been two instances when driving that an emergency notice came on scaring me to death. I'm not sure what happened but felt like the car was going to die. It didn't and went away but makes me nervous about the UI. Lastly, I've had the car only 5K miles and there is a paint issue on the right rear near the charging port. Seems a manufacturer defect for some cars per Reddit. Annoying.

Power Failure in a Two Week Old Vehicle

Two weeks after I lease/purchased the Ioniq 5, i experienced a complete power failure on the busy 405 freeway south of L.A. and was in the dangerous position of having to drift across three lanes of heavy traffic to get to the shoulder. Two Hyundai service centers were unable to determine the cause of the failure because the computer had failed to register the event and provided no error code. I was told by the service managers at both dealerships that they had never seen this happen before - a quick google search led me to news of a recall of Ioniq 5s in December 2024 because of power failures and an earlier class action lawsuit because of power failures. All of my other experiences with this car are dwarfed by this single terrifying and potentially lethal experience. I was disappointed that Hyundai took no responsibility for this major flaw.

THE ideal EV

The IONIQ 5 is a comfortable, quiet, exhilarating vehicle to drive. Highly recommend the native NACS option, which, with the provided CCS adapter, unlocks fast charging at ALL stations. A quick example of driving the IONIQ 5. My first road trip was from Sacramento to Lassen Nat’l Park (~200 miles). Stopped in Redding for a quick bite at Sonic and charge at Tesla, and my EV jumped from 40% to 90% before we had finished our burgers (<20 min). Plenty of charge to get around from our campsite in Old Station to several parks and sites over the week, before a stop at the same Tesla charging station on our way home. Easy, convenient, no worries.

Random expensive repair in first month?!?!

Side glass broke while parked in garage! The car was only 1 month old! Very expensive repair not covered under warranty. I’m really hoping I didn’t just buy the wrong car (from the wrong company).

Great vehicle overall, range could be better, 259 miles is just not enough for road trips in the Western US.

Great to drive

Even from an enthusiast's perspective, the Ionic is a great driving and handling car. It drives like a car should and not like other EVs that drive like a cheaply made land boat. The responsiveness and handling make you feel connected to the road and car.

enjoying 2025 Ioniq 5

Car is a joy to drive. Solid steering with easy handling at any speed; firm braking feeling with several regenerative braking options that help slow vehicle speed without applying the brake petal. Charging is simple and easy and we are getting considerable driving range on a full charge. Cabin is very quiet and comfortable with quick acting climate system. And finally, acceleration is amazing fast, yet quiet and easy to control. Love the car

Good not yet great

I have owned a Tesla for 10 years decided it’s time for a new different car. Got the Hyundai ionic five it’s great ride very comfortable. Has all the gadgets just not easy to charge. I spend usually 20 minutes trying to get it to charge or need to find other places to charge.

So far so good

We are mostly happy with the purchase, but more training is needed to understand and utilize all of the features. Sometimes they work, and some not (seat settings, unplugging, change driver, CarPlay works sometimes but not always) It seems to be a steep learning curve without having to study the manual (who has time for that?)

We love our new family car.

we love our car...fast, well appointed and everything was well-thought out/flat phone charger, camera's everywhere...and since we hate Trump/ICE and Musk/Tesla...its our anti-fascist-Pro Democracy Hyundai. Save Democracy & Fight Christian Nationalism! BTW, we came from a Mercedes and only BMW before that.

Great vehicle overall. Infotainment disappoints.

Why do I have to select the drive mode every time? Why do I have to press 3 buttons to see what is playing on XM radio? Things that should be easy in 2025, are not easy in this car. Example: You press the home button and it doesn't go to the home screen until you press it again. The map in the home screen is set to dark mode and not changeable. That means unless you hit the map button you can't actually see the map. Lots of frustrating things like this keep me from 5 stars.
