While repeated mechanical tailgate usage isn't encouraged for long term use on the tailgate, it's perfectly fine to do it from time to time. For example, when you adjust the height for the locked height mechanism on the automatic tailgate, you have to physically stop it at the height that you want the automatic tailgate to open to.
