Forget What Normies Say, These Are Great Trucks
Everyone loves to tell you that Land Rovers are un-reliable, have expensive parts, are too complex to wrench on, etc. Total BS. Newer Rovers might have their issues, but old timers like the Discovery 1 are pretty darn solid. Its got all the room under the hood for wrenching, has the most basic OBDII fuel injection, and looks like a tractor underneath.
Sure, the engine that the lads in Solihull chose to power this glorious aluminum and steel beast wasn't the most ideal, and yeah, they can have weird foibles here and there in terms of electrics. The engine is a 1960s Buick V8, that really hasn't changed much since the 1960s.
But whatever - they're stout, simple, have great suspension travel, feature excellent approach and departure angles, have high and low gearing with a center differential lock, and are just honest-to-goodness, easy-to-wrench-on fun. Parts pricing isn't bad at all, either. Keeping them from leaking at least a little bit is a bit of a challenge, but that's what keeping fluids in the truck is for.
It's a great truck for those who savor simplicity and functionality, and want a very analogue experience when it comes to crawling up or down some otherwise intimidating trails. The Discovery 1 is a champ.
