Dealership Deception Leads to Unneeded Rental and High Charge
I had a terrible experience at Killeen Hyundai that felt bordering on extortion. In short, I was billed $2,412.12 for a part and service I didn’t need. I brought my car in with the diagnostic code, after Auto Zone had already identified the issue, and advisor Derrick Golden told me the part would cost around $1,200 and take three days to arrive. I asked for an emailed invoice to compare prices, but received no email or follow-up for two more days, then had to call again. After finally getting the invoice, I did my own research and found the exact part on Amazon for about $75 with next-day delivery, and scheduled repair services with another reputable mechanic for the next day. I even arranged a tow to transfer my car from Killeen Hyundai to the other shop. Derrick was rude and unprofessional to both me and the tow driver. Once at the other shop, it became clear I didn’t need the costly part at all—the dealership had simply cleaned the part, resolving the issue. They also tacked on an extra $30 “shop fee” on top of a $230 mandatory service charge, and showed no intention of informing me that the repair wasn’t needed. The entire debacle was greatly amplified by the rental car I had for five days, which would have been unnecessary if the dealership—specifically Derrick—had been honest about the state of my car instead of trying to charge me $2,412.52.
