Warranty Response and Action
On Sept 19, 2021 my vehicle suffered a sudden loss of power and noticeable vibration. I pulled over only to find a pool of fluid under the engine. The vehicle was towed to Big Joe Auto on North Academy Blvd. After careful inspection, it was noted that the vehicle had a hole in the side of the block. They also said that it appeared to be a rod bearing issue/failure. They also indicated that vehicle was covered under a recall notice, campaign 966 ("Hyundai is conducting a service campaign to enhance the knock sensor software to detect abnormal engine bearing noise before potentially severe engine damage occurs on certain 2011-2012 model year Santa Fe and 2012-2017 Veloster vehicles") and Extended warranty Reference #TXXM ("warranty coverage for engine repairs and/or replacement where the engine damage, defect, or failure is related to connecting rod bearing wear, on certain 2011-2012 Santa Fe, 2011-2013 Sonata, and 2012-2017 Veloster vehicles has been extended to 15 years or 150,00 milesfrom the date of original retail delivery or date of first use....and is valid for original and subsequent owners"). I did not receive any warning as the Malfuntion Indicator Lamp (MIL) did not illuminate and my vehicle did not enter into the Engine Protection Mode prior to the failure as should have occured according to the manufacturer. Also did not receive any engine warning light prior to the failure.
Big Joe had the vehicle towed over to Phil Long Hyundai for further assesment and repair under the recall notice and extended warranty.
After almost a month, I had not receive any communication, so I called the service department. I spoke with Ryan and he told me that they would not take any action until I provided all oil change records from the original purchase of the vehicle. I explained that the vehicle failed to warn me of iminent failure due to the defect in the MIL which was covered under Recall #966. I also expained that I bought the vehicle used and that the warranty automatically extended the warranty on the vehicle to 150K miles according to the Extended Warranty Reference #TXXM. He repeated the same request of having all of the oil change records. Customer service is not a part of this dealership as I was discounted and felt unheard. He also told me that the vehicle was no longer in their facility and had been sent back to Big Joe Auto. I am frustrated as the communication from the dealer was non-existent. They never called me as the owner and customer to update me as to the status of my vehicle and more so its location. I had to call just to be told that they would not address or even consider the factory recalls and warranties. Hyundai felt it was very important to send these notices to me but Phil Long Hyundai obviously does not take the safety of the customer into the same context. Frustrated and without my only means of transportation.
